FIA’s Nikolas Tombazis confirms flexibility to adjust 2026 energy deployment and Overtake Mode parameters during the season based on real-world performance data.

FIA Single Seater Director Nikolas Tombazis has revealed that the governing body retains significant flexibility to tweak energy deployment parameters, including the new Overtake Mode, throughout the 2026 Formula 1 season.

With the introduction of radically new power unit regulations featuring a near 50:50 split between combustion and electric power, the sport is entering uncharted territory. The ability to adjust how energy is deployed is crucial to ensure competitive racing and avoid scenarios where cars run out of power prematurely, maintaining the spectacle while teams navigate a steep development curve.

  • New Overtake Mode: Replacing the traditional Drag Reduction System (DRS), this mode provides a power boost to drivers within one second of a car ahead in designated zones.
  • Boost Mode: Unlike the zone-specific Overtake Mode, this allows drivers to deploy extra energy anywhere on the track, regardless of whether they are attacking or defending.
  • Energy Management: A critical challenge will be managing energy levels to prevent depletion at the end of straights, making strategy more complex than ever.
  • Adaptive Regulations: Tombazis emphasized that while initial settings are based on simulations, the FIA can adjust parameters like overtake zones once real data from all 11 teams is available.
