Piastri edges Antonelli in tight Japanese GP second practice

Oscar Piastri led a tight second practice for the Japanese GP, topping the timesheets ahead of Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli and George Russell. The session hinted at a close fight for qualifying supremacy, though it was disrupted by technical issues for several drivers, including Lando Norris.

Oscar Piastri set the pace in a closely contested second practice session for the Japanese Grand Prix, narrowly beating Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli by less than a tenth of a second. The McLaren driver's time of 1:30.133s on soft tires proved unbeatable, with George Russell making it two Mercedes cars in the top three. The session was marked by several disruptions, including a hydraulic issue for world champion Lando Norris and various on-track incidents.

Why it matters:

Free Practice 2 is often the most representative session of a Grand Prix weekend, providing the clearest indication of single-lap pace ahead of qualifying. A tight battle at the front between McLaren and Mercedes, with Ferrari also in the mix, suggests a highly competitive qualifying session could be in store. The performance also highlights the continued strong form of rookie Kimi Antonelli, who is keeping pace with his experienced teammate.

The details:

  • McLaren on top: Oscar Piastri's benchmark time came during the soft-tire qualifying simulations, finding over a second compared to his earlier medium-tire run.
  • Mercedes close behind: Kimi Antonelli and George Russell responded with their own soft-tire runs but fell just short, securing P2 and P3 respectively and showing strong one-lap speed for the Silver Arrows.
  • Norris's disrupted session: Reigning champion Lando Norris lost significant track time due to a suspected hydraulic issue, confining him to the garage for the opening stages. He still managed to recover to fourth, albeit over half a second behind his teammate.
  • Ferrari in the mix: Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton finished fifth and sixth, with Leclerc's session compromised by traffic at the final chicane during his fastest lap attempt.
  • Verstappen off the pace: Max Verstappen had a low-key session, finishing tenth and more than a second adrift of Piastri's leading time.
  • Session incidents: The hour was punctuated by several events:
    • Alex Albon stopped briefly at Turn 1 with a loss of power.
    • Franco Colapinto was noted by stewards for driving erratically after an incident involving Verstappen.
    • Pierre Gasly was released into the path of Albon in the pit lane.
  • Technical troubles: Several drivers faced limited running. Arvid Lindblad (Racing Bulls) failed to set a time due to a gearbox issue, while Audi's Gabriel Bortoleto had an early power unit problem. Sergio Perez also lost time repairing damage from an earlier session.

What's next:

The teams will now analyze the data from Friday's running to finalize their setups for qualifying. All eyes will be on whether Mercedes can convert its promising one-lap pace into a pole position challenge, or if McLaren and Ferrari have more performance to unlock. The final practice session (FP3) begins at 11:30 AM local time on Saturday, serving as the last chance for adjustments before the all-important qualifying hour that sets the grid for Sunday's race.
