Williams Skips Barcelona Shakedown Due to FW48 Delays

Williams misses the Barcelona shakedown due to FW48 delays, opting for virtual testing ahead of the crucial Bahrain session.

Williams Racing has confirmed it will skip next week's pre-season shakedown at Barcelona due to delays in the production of its new FW48 chassis. Instead of putting Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz on track, the team will prioritize virtual development and simulations to ensure the car is ready for the new regulatory era.

Why it matters:

Missing the opening track time is a significant gamble given the sweeping technical overhaul for 2026, which features active aerodynamics and a 50:50 combustion-electric power split. While the team is avoiding the risk of running an incomplete car, the lack of real-world data in Barcelona could leave Williams playing catch-up when the season begins.

The details:

  • Program Delays: The Grove-based outfit announced that the build process for the FW48 is not sufficiently advanced to participate in the Barcelona running, scheduled for January 26–30.
  • Strategic Pivot: Rather than rushing, Williams will conduct a Virtual Test Track (VTT) program. This digital approach aims to correlate simulation models with theoretical data before the car physically hits the tarmac.
  • Historical Context: The absence echoes the 2019 season when Williams missed testing due to financial struggles. Unlike that period, the current delay is attributed to the sheer complexity of the 2026 regulations rather than a lack of resources under Dorilton Capital.
  • Industry Trend: Williams is not the only team adjusting its schedule; McLaren has also announced it will not run on the first day of the test, indicating a broader trend of caution across the grid.

What's next:

All eyes now turn to the second and final pre-season test in Bahrain from February 11–13. This will be the critical moment for Williams to debut the FW48 and gather essential data ahead of the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne.
