Aston Martin Ends F1 Safety Car Role, Mercedes to Resume Sole Control

Aston Martin will not renew its contract as an F1 safety car supplier, ending its partnership that began in 2021. Despite significant technical upgrades to the Vantage, the manufacturer is stepping away, allowing Mercedes to regain exclusive duties from the 2026 season.

Aston Martin is ending its contentious tenure as Formula 1's co-safety car supplier, choosing not to renew its contract for the upcoming season. This decision concludes the British manufacturer's three-year stint alongside Mercedes, which began in 2021, and marks the return of the German marque's monopoly on safety and medical car duties starting in 2026.

Why it matters:

The partnership was frequently overshadowed by debates over performance parity and the car's ability to maintain tire temperatures during safety car periods. By stepping away, Aston Martin can redirect its engineering focus entirely toward its competitive racing package, while F1 returns to a single-supplier model for safety vehicles, ensuring consistency in how races are neutralized.

The details:

  • Performance Struggles: The original Vantage F1 Edition was widely criticized for being heavier and significantly less powerful than its Mercedes counterpart. The performance deficit was so notable that four-time champion Max Verstappen famously dubbed it the "green turtle."
  • Technical Upgrades: To address these shortcomings, Aston Martin introduced a substantially revised Vantage for the 2024 season with enhanced power. They further iterated on this design at the Dutch Grand Prix with the Vantage S, utilizing a V8 engine for greater performance.
  • Mercedes' Return: With Aston Martin's exit, Mercedes resumes full responsibility. The AMG GT Black Series will return to the track, though it will feature a new red livery representing sponsor CrowdStrike rather than the traditional silver.

What's next:

Mercedes will take over sole responsibilities for the 2026 season, bringing an end to the alternating race weekend format. While F1 has not ruled out seeking an additional supplier in the future, the immediate focus is on a standardized, high-performance safety car operation under Mercedes' stewardship.
